South America - Peacock Bass - Brazil
Over 350 Peacock Bass weighing 20 pounds or better!

During the 2001-2002 fishing season, anglers at the Rio Negro Lodge and the Amazon Queen combined for a total of 374 fish weighing 20 pounds or more. John L. Morris, owner of Bass Pro Shops and Outdoor World, landed and released a 21, 22, 23, and 25.5 pound peacock bass in one day of fishing.

While staying at the Rio Negro Lodge, Phil Jensen, owner of Luhr-Jensen, caught a 25 pound and a monster 26.5 pound peacock bass that was just ounces shy of the All-Tackle World Record.

In February, Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Chris Carter landed three fish over 20 pounds, including a 24 pounder!

During the last week of February the Rio Negro Lodge was host to the Rolex/IGFA Fly Fishing Tournament - 2002 Qualifying Event.  In the three-day tournament, 16 anglers caught 859 fish up to 19 pounds and the winner was Dr. Stephen Ward. This was the first peacock bass fly fishing tournament and because of its great success, it will be an annual event.

The fishing on the Rio Negro River just keeps improving year after year. This is due in large part to the cessation of all commercial fishing and netting from the Rio Branco to the Colombian border. This has resulted in a dramatic increase in the number of peacock bass.  There were 21 bass landed in 2001-2002 that weighed in excess of 25 pounds!

Destination

The Rio Negro Lodge is located 60 river miles upstream from Barcelos, Brazil, in the heart of Brazil's premier peacock bass fishing. The diversity of your surroundings is unforgettable--200-foot hardwood trees wrapped by native vines, white sand beaches and over 1,500 species of flowering plant life. The Rio Negro is over 20 kilometers wide and encompasses hundreds of backwater sloughs, secluded lakes, lagoons and waterways that offer endless fishing opportunities for world record peacock bass. In addition to being the "tropical fish capital of the world," the region is home to more than 1,000 species of birds, butterflies, mammals and amphibians. Monkeys, sloths, anteaters, manatees, alligators, porpoises and even jaguar inhabit this remote haven.

The Lodge

The Rio Negro Lodge, completed in October 1998, offers uncompromised luxury accommodations in the heart of the Brazilian Rain Forest. This spacious retreat, below the jungle canopy, was created to provide you with the comforts and privacy you expect in a luxury resort. The 5,000-square-foot air-conditioned main lodged is centrally located and serves as a gathering place for dining or relaxing. Spread along winding walkways on either side of the main lodge are the private cabins. Each air-conditioned cabin has queen sized beds, private baths with hot water, walk-in showers and closets, a sitting area and a full length covered porch with a stunning view of the rain forest and the Rio Negro. Throughout the property the use of hand crafted native woods, slate floors and thatched roofs is impressive. In addition to these extraordinary facilities, as a guest you will also enjoy daily laundry service, jungle trails and a private beach, as well as carefully prepared cuisine including pasta dishes, grilled steaks, superb local fish, fresh baked breads and an assortment of tropical fruits.
