This fascinating continent
is home to the largest rain forest in the world, the Amazon, as well as
some of the highest and most remote mountain ranges. Unfortunately, it has
suffered from some of the worst cases of environmental exploitation on
earth and much of the pristine wilderness has been destroyed.
An interesting variety of
big game is found in South America, but much of it is now protected, due
to excessive market hunting and enormous loss of habitat. Species such as
the jaguar, spectacled bear, marsh deer, pampas deer and two species of
huemul are unique to this continent - all are now protected.
Nevertheless, it is still
possible to hunt cougar, white-tailed deer, two species of brocket deer
and two species of peccary. Additionally, ranchers in Argentina have
imported numerous exotic species, which have adapted well and even
flourished. Red deer, axis deer, blackbuck, fallow deer and wild boar are
some examples of exotic species, which can be hunted on huge private
ranches. |
